Award Provisions

Each NU BIRCWH award provides up to $100,000 TOTAL per Scholar per year of appointment.  This amount can be allocated toward salary, research supplies and support staff, and career development activities.  In addition, each Scholar receives a $2,000 travel budget per year of appointment.

Allowable costs include:

·     Salary: A minimum of $75,000 and up to $100,000 per Scholar per year may be requested for salary (including fringe benefits).  The salary must be based on a full-time, 12-month appointment and must be used toward the institutional base salary.  If the base and fringe benefits of the scholar does not reach or exceed $75,000, the remainder may be used for research and career development expenses.

·     Research and Development Support: Up to $25,000 per Scholar per year may be requested for the following types of expenses: (a) tuition and fees and books related to career development; (b) research expenses, such as supplies, equipment, and technical personnel; (c) travel to research meetings or training; and (d) statistical services including personnel and computer time.

·     Travel: Travel funds in the amount of $2,000 per year are budgeted specifically for each Scholar to attend the annual NIH BIRCWH Scholars Meeting and Interdisciplinary Women’s Health Research Symposium.  The balance of travel funds may be used to attend one other (national) scientific meeting.  Travel includes airfare, lodging, ground transportation, registration fees, and meals.

Additional provisions:

·     F&A Costs: This is an internal, institutional award, and F&A (Facilities and Administration) is NOT available to departments.  The recipient department of this award must agree to cover any F&A costs associated with the expenses on this award.

·     Percent Effort: The departments are required to protect 75% (9 calendar months) of the award recipient’s professional time to direct toward the funded proposal for the duration of the award.

·     Supplemental Departmental Funds: Additional salary appropriate to compensating the Scholar for the amount of time protected by the grant may be supplemented by Departmental funds; however, supplementation may NOT be from federal funds unless specifically authorized by the federal program from which such funds are derived.  Any supplementation of salary cannot require extra duties or responsibilities that would interfere with the purpose of this award.

Scholars' Other Source(s) of Support: BIRCWH Scholars may not accept or hold any other PHS award that duplicates the provisions of this career award.  Scholars are expected to apply for independent research grant support by the end of their first year of K12 support and may receive concurrent salary support from a competing research grant when in compliance with NIH Policy Notice, NOT-OD-08-065 (http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-08-065.html).

The application period for 2014 appointments has ended.  Our next RFA will be issued in early 2015..
