Applicant Eligibility and Exclusions

We will accept applications from early career faculty members.  Faculty members who are being recruited to Northwestern can also apply for this award.  Both men and women are welcome to apply.  In addition, eligible BIRCWH Scholar candidates must:

·    Hold a research or health-professional doctoral degree or its equivalent, including but not limited to MD, DO, and PhD

·    Have completed any postgraduate training normally expected for a faculty appointment (including clinical or postdoctoral fellowship training)

·    Have no more than six (6) years of research or research training experience beyond the last doctoral degree [Note: Any time on family leave is excluded from this time limit.  Applicants re-entering an investigative career path will also be considered.]

·    Be a U.S. citizen or noncitizen national or have been lawfully admitted for permanent residence and possess an Alien Registration Receipt Card (I-151 or I-155) or other verification of legal admission as a permanent citizen AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION.  Individuals on temporary or student visas are not eligible.

·    NOT be or have been a Principal Investigator on an R01, R29 or subproject of a Program Project (P01), Center (P50, P60, U54) grant, mentored career development (K-series) grants, or other equivalent research grant awards; only exceptions are for R03 and R21 grants.

·    Be able to spend at least 75% of full-time professional effort conducting research and research career development activities for a minimum of two years

·    Have a primary Mentor selected from the NU BIRCWH Mentors

·    It is expected that applicant will have a tenure track appointment or there will be a departmental commitment to such an appointment. Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
